Kool Smiles Grant Will Provide Pediatric Dental Care and Training

by Kool Smiles

A $25,000 grant from Kool Smiles will allow the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center to offer dental care to up to 65 young patients, and pediatric dentistry training to up to 65 students. The grant will provide life-changing dental treatment to children who may not otherwise have access to dental care, said Janice Townsend, DDS, MS, Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at LSUHSC School of Dentistry. The grant will also allow students interested in pediatric dentistry to gain training and experience in working with young patients.
For each patient, the grant will cover a checkup, an initial diagnosis, treatment plan, and any required restorative care. Patients who receive services would not normally be eligible to receive dental care from the school’s dental clinic or from Kool Smiles, which means they typically are above 250 percent of the Poverty Income Guidelines and do not qualify for Medicaid.
Dental students who provide care covered by the grant will learn common pediatric restorative procedures, such as pulp therapy treatment and stainless steel crowns. They will also learn behavior guidance practices for patients 6 years old and younger.
