Kool Smiles and Peace Corps Promote Children’s Dental Health in Guyana

Since 2002, Kool Smiles has worked to expand access to quality dental care in underserved communities across the United States via its network of unique, child-friendly dental offices. Kool Smiles' efforts to deliver oral health services to those most in need extend around the world, as it recently helped bring dental supplies to a remote community in Guyana.
In July 2015, Kool Smiles donated over 400 dental kits to the village of Haimaracabra, Guyana. Situated on the northeastern coast of South America, Guyana has difficulty providing education and health care resources to its people because of transportation limitations. Because a visit to the nearest dentist often requires a two-hour trip by boat, many people only seek dental care in the case of a dental emergency. For this reason, tooth decay is a prevalent issue in many Guyanese communities, where many residents lack access to basic resources such as toothbrushes.
With the help of Peace Corps volunteers, Kool Smiles distributed supplies to help prevent tooth decay and promote basic oral hygiene in Haimaracabra. The dental kits, which contained dental floss, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, went to the village’s primary and nursery schools, and Peace Corps volunteers also taught children basic oral hygiene habits. They partnered with a local nurse practitioner to host a dental health fair at the village’s community center, where they used engaging methods to demonstrate how to use the new supplies.
