An Introduction to Pediatric Orthodontics

Orthodontic problems typically arise when kids are around 12 or
13, after all of their adult teeth have come in. At this point, parents
may notice that their children’s teeth have become crowded or crooked.
Parents who are concerned about their preteen’s dental alignment or bite
should request a referral to an orthodontist from their general
dentist, and they should do so earlier rather than later.
As teens grow older, their teeth and jaw bone structures begin to set and
become less malleable. While orthodontic measures such as braces can
still correct the smile of a fully grown adult, beginning orthodontic
treatment at an earlier age often yields better results. However, an
orthodontist will only consider braces for children or teens once their
full set of adult teeth has fully grown in.
